In one week I will be heading out to Colorado to begin hiking the Colorado Trail. I'm going to meet my hiking friend Moosie out there and we will start hiking south from Denver to Durango. I'm most excited to see the San Juans in the south west corner of the state. I had to skip the San Juans and take the Creede alternate when I hiked the CDT southbound in 2013 due to snow. I'm excited to see the state during the summer this time, rather than the fall. Ahhhh summertime. At least that's how it felt yesterday. I managed to reconnect with the A.T. for a few hours near Harper's Ferry. I hiked up to Weaverton Cliffs and hiked a little ways north. There were several backpackers also on the trail: a couple of north bound thru hikers and a few section hikers. What is it about a trail that just feels so good to walk on?

Now that we've entered the month of June, the forest is enveloped in the color green here in Maryland's Piedmont region. A few wildflowers can be seen here and there, mountain laurel are pretty much finished blooming and the petals are falling to the forest floor. The forest is hard at work photosynthesizing...

Rachel Carson Greenway Trail: Mountain Laurel

Mountain Laurel is blooming along the Rachel Carson Greenway Trail right now. With temperatures expected in the 90's this week, the flowers will most likely be in peak bloom this week. I personally would rank the blooming of the mountain laurel amongst my top 10 favorite natural phenomena. Get out there and see these fantastic plants while you can!
