Scarlet pimpernel (above)
Large flowered phacelia (above)
I went for a hike in Griffith Park today between work assignments on an unseasonably cool but bright afternoon. Since I haven't been hiking much lately I was not happy about noticing that my legs were unusually tired and shaky. The mustard plants are bursting about, some plants probably 8 to 9 feet tall. Also came across this spectacular peach colored wildflower while hiking down a small trail descending off the ridge.

  1. Beautiful images, Mark.
I'm wondering how you plan to deal with all the photos I expect you will be taking... bringing extra camera-cards? Sending the full cards to some trusty person? You certainly will have a lot of images to sort though at some point. I expect you'll be keeping a journal too, right?

  2. Hey Kate,
Yes, my brother offered to be that "trusty person" so I'm going to be sending him the memory cards, he will download them onto an external hard drive, and then send me the empty chip at a future resupply point. Also, he will be guest authoring on the blog and posting updates and pictures from time to time.

Also, I will be journaling, but doing it the old fashioned way with notebook and pen!

  3. So, will you be bringing a cell phone? Or, checking in with your brother when you're near a phone. I'm SO GLAD we'll be getting updates!

  4. Yes Kate, I will be bringing a cell phone but will be keeping it in the bounce bucket. The bounce bucket basically follows us from resupply to resupply. If we choose to open it, then we have to pay for postage to the next resupply stop. If we do not open it, the Post Office is supposed to mail it for free to the next stop. Dan and I are keeping a few small items in the bucket that we do not want to hike with day after day. I'm keeping my phone in there to make calls when I'm in town.

  5. Cool. Glad to know we can keep track of you out there. Your "trusty" brother has a big job. Is your first step on the trail May 1? How far do you get those first couple of days? Will you hit snow in the San Berdoo's and San Gabriels? Let me know if there are ways I can help out when you hit the Sierra. Wooohooo!!

  6. Dan and I start May 5th. The San Gabriel's are still a bit of a mystery. The Station Fire destroyed a lot of the area where the PCT runs through and there is still not an official detour. I'll be checking on it until we leave. If there is still no info about it, I guess we will figure out a plan once we get there. Sounds like there is still a lot of snow on Jacinto. Some of the early hikers had some serious trouble on that mountain a couple weeks ago...

  7. Actually, it was Apache Peak in early April when the hikers experienced a lot of ice and snow, and treacherous hiking, which I believe is just before passing Jacinto...
